Performance venues can range from pop-up temporary stages in urban areas to lavish historical buildings purpose built for entertainment. We have a vast collection of imagery representing venues both old and new, traditional and alternative, and even those that are no longer standing such as the Gaiety, Imperial and Alhambra theatres.
Archives such as The University of Bristol Theatre Collection and the Mander and Mitchenson Collection provide hundreds of historical etchings, illustrations and photographs of venue exteriors and interiors throughout the UK including most of the West End theatres past and present. Whilst the Royal Opera House Collection charts the history of performance venues on its current Covent Garden site in London - including a fascinating photo documentary of the site redevelopment between 1997 and 1999.
Current theatre and concert photographers such as Clive Barda, Johan Persson, Mark Douet, Pete Jones, Colin Willoughby, Sheila Burnett and Frazer Ashford cover many contemporary venues across the UK such as the Crucible in Sheffield, the Cardiff Millennium Centre in Wales, the Edinburgh Festival Hall in Scotland. London's West End venues including the Palladium, the Lyceum, the Savoy, the Palace and the Shaftesbury Theatres are also well represented, as are other performance venues and concert halls such as the Royal Albert Hall, Shakespeare's Globe, the Coliseum, the Old Vic and the Young Vic.
